PLASTIC FREE CAMPAIGN: An Initiative of Green Militia

24th March, 2010/ Rajiv Gandhi South Campus-BHU, Barkachha, Mirzapur.

The Eco-Club of Rajiv Gandhi South Campus (RGSC) of Banaras Hindu
University (BHU) THE GREEN MILITIA  organized the first ever
‘Cleanliness drive’ on 24th March. The students and staff of RGSC
collected polythene bags scattered in the campus premises from 7.30
a.m. to 9 a.m. after which Prof. O.N. Singh, Officer-on-Special
Duty(O.S.D.), RGSC and former Chief Proctor of BHU addressed the
volunteers. Approximately 80 students and teachers took part in the
campaign for making ‘RGSC plastic free campus’.
Chief Guest, Prof. O.N. Singh spent over an hour with the volunteers
discussing the menace polythenes are creating in the campus premises.
He said, “plastics are really a challenge for all of us as their
disposal is a big question mark. In the campus, he has directed the
canteen staff to use mud-glasses (kulhads) instead of plastic glass
for serving tea”.
Prof Singh said, “The Green Militia is a wonderful initiative towards
environment awareness in the campus. I am inspired by the students for
their job been done so greatly. Its effect is visible in the campus. I
will be with the eco-club in future in all its endeavours and we will
together work towards an eco-friendly campus. As RGSC is in its
developing stage, and at present the way The Green Militia has been
successful in its motive, in future we will see its long term effect.”
For the first time students freely interacted with Prof. O.N. Singh
after his appointment as O.S.D. in the south campus. He assured the
students that very soon, dustbins will be established in the campus
premises for proper waste management. He said, until we bring changes
in our behavior, and don’t take initiatives to bring our own bags to
shops, the use of plastic will not stop. We should not only take steps
in our lifestyle but motivate others as well.” The Earth
Matters Foundation (EMF) is supporting us in our movement against the
polythene in the campus. EMF will award the vendors and shopkeepers in
and around campus if they take steps towards reducing the use of
plastics. The support from EMF is a great honor for The Green Militia.
We are thankful to our O.S.D. Prof Singh for encouraging us and we
will seek his guidance in future as well.”
After the event, a mass signature campaign was held which was
inaugurated in the presence of Prof. Singh. After that teachers and
students of the campus gave their signature for lending their full
support for making RGSC a plastic free campus.
