WETLAND DAY CELEBRATION


On 2nd February, 2010 The eco-club of RGSC (Rajiv Gandhi South Campus-Banaras Hindu University), “The Green Militia” coordinated its first awareness campaign on the occasion of ‘World Wetland Day’. The student members contributed to the fund themselves and created posters. In the whole campus approximately 150 posters depicting importance of wetlands were put up. The member’s commitment to the conservation for nature inspired them to organize it in ‘hostel common hall’ which have capacity to hold approximately 150 students. In the evening, first ever ‘Wetland Day’ of the south campus celebrated with 5 faculty members as guests. On the occasion a lecture on wetlands was organized along with 3 documentaries. ‘The fragile web’ (available on youtube>the mike pandey channel), and ‘Turtles in a soup’, which I got from Earth Matters Foundation last year was shown. A short movie on Wetlands made by me was also shown on the evening. A quiz competition and cartoon making competition was also organized. The fact that it was organized 6 pm in evening, all the boys in the campus were free to attend the program and they also didn’t missed their classes. The program was very well appreciated. Mr. Ankit Seth (Faculty of Ayurveda) present there said, “it is a revolutionary measure to form an organization like The Green Militia in the campus for our environment. I am grateful to the students who took initiative for betterment of environment when no one has time to even think of it”. Mr. Kaustav Chatterjee (Faculty of Tourism management) said, we are proud that ‘The Green Militia’ has started from our hostel, and the way it has done its homework prior setup, its obvious how big is the dream of the club. Another teacher, Mr. Sushil Kumar (Faculty of Commerce) said, ‘The Green Militia’ is an organization of brave students of RGSC and I will personally tell all the teachers of the campus to join in this noble cause’. Mr. Vijai Krishna (Centre for Environmental Science and Technology) said, ‘ Its very good to see such community involvement programs being organized at ground levels. And students should be congratulated to make this event a great success.” Dr. Anil Kumar tripathi (Agricultural Economics) said, “This event is a great event, and my knowledge has increased about the environment. Initiatives like The Green Militia should be supported by all of us. I extend by all possible support for it. I congratulate these students who took this initiative in the campus.” All the teachers extended their full support for the club, and now this club has 10 faculty members, and more than 60 student members and 3 non teaching staff. The event got great media coverage the next day. ‘Hindustan’ printed it as top news in pg2 and ‘Dainik Jagran’ also printed it in pg3’.
